Men’s Basketball to Play in Preseason NIT

ELON, N.C. – The 2009-10 Elon Phoenix athletic season continues this week as the men’s basketball team travels to Durham, N.C., to compete in the Preseason NIT on Monday and Tuesday before hosting Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham in the home opener. The Phoenix women’s basketball squad will take on St. Andrews on Friday evening in Alumni Gym. The football team will face Samford in Birmingham, Ala., for the first time since 2001. Every Monday, Phoenix fans can get a look at the week ahead with our “This Week in Elon Athletics” feature when we will preview all of the week’s upcoming events for our fall sports teams.
 
Men’s Basketball (1-0)
Elon vs. Charlotte; Monday, November 16 at 9:30 p.m.; Durham, N.C.
Elon vs. Coastal Carolina/Duke; Tuesday, November 17; Durham, N.C.
Elon vs. Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham; Friday, November 20; Elon, N.C.
 
• Elon knocked off Lipscomb, 91-86, in the season opener last Saturday.
• Four players scored in double figures – seniors Adam Constantine and Devan Carter and sophomore Josh Bonney and Drew Spradlin.
• Elon got 20+ points from Bonney (24) and Spradlin (23) who both netted career highs in the road victory.
• In the game against Lipscomb, the teams combined for 143 shot attempts and 42 free throw attempts. There were 82 rebounds in the contest.
 
Women’s Basketball (1-1)
Elon vs. St. Andrews; Friday, November 20 at 5 p.m.; Elon, N.C.
 
• The Phoenix is off to a 1-1 start this season. Elon earned an 88-68 win in the season opener against Youngstown State before falling to Navy, 68-61.
• Newcomers combined for 58 points, 22 rebounds, 13 assists, four blocks and four steals in the win over Youngstown State. Ali Ford debuted with 23 points, while Kelsey Evans recorded a double-double in her first game in the maroon and black.
• Four Phoenix players were in double figures against Youngstown State.
• Elon finished with 46 points in the paint and 38 tallies of the bench against the Penguins.
 
Football (8-2, 6-1 SoCon)
Elon at Samford; Saturday, November 21 at 3 p.m.; Birmingham, Ala.
 
• Terrell Hudgins caught 10 balls for 127 yards to tie the NCAA Division I record with his 26th career 100-yard game. He shares the mark with Nevada’s Trevor Insley (1996-99).
• Elon will look for its ninth win of the season this week by traveling to Samford. The last nine-win season for Elon came in 1999 (9-2).
• Elon owns a 5-2 all-time record against Samford, including a 23-17 decision in the Bulldogs' first-ever SoCon game a year ago.
