SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Southern Conference office today announced that Elon freshman infielder Chase Austin (Charlotte, N.C.) has been selected as the league's Player of the Week for April 16. Austin becomes the first Phoenix player to claim a baseball Player of the Week honor this year, but the fourth Elon player to be honored by the SoCon as three pitchers have earned Pitcher of the Week accolades in 2007.
Austin batted .692 (9-for-13) with three doubles and a triple while driving in six runs and scoring three during Elon's three-game series with Furman. He had at least two hits and two RBI in each of the three games in thes series. On Friday, Austin went 4-for-5 to tally the first four-hit game of his career. In Saturday's doubleheader, he went 3-for-4 and 2-for-4. His triple on Friday was the first of his Elon career.
With Austin's efforts, Elon has now won 11 consecutive SoCon series.
On the season, Austin is hitting .321 with 21 runs scored and 29 RBI. He boasts a .491 slugging percentage and has eight doubles, a triple and three home runs in 33 games.
Others considered for Player of the Week include: Zach Brown (CIT), Andrew Franco (ASU), Keith Munns (WOF), Barrett Shaft (WCU), Griffin Benedict (GSU) and Rob Wilson (DAV).
