TROY, AL -- Elon and Troy State played to a doubleheader split through a rainy afternoon in Troy on Tuesday. The Lady Trojans took the opener by a score of 10-0 in five innings, but the Phoenix bounced back to take the nightcap 5-3. On the year Elon is now 8-20 while TSU is now 30-10.
Jenny Gustin and Suzanne Speed grabbed the only two hits for the Phoenix in game one, both singles. TSU pounded out 14 hits to score their 10 runs. In the circle, Shannon Courtney suffered the loss, falling to 0-4 on the year. Courtney threw 2.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits. Megan Borgaard came on in relief to throw 1.2 innings and allow five runs (three earned) while giving up four hits. Kim Unkenkolz (6-2) picked up the win for the Lady Trojans.
Elon broke open a scoreless tie in game two with a three run frame in the top of the third. Troy State would rally in the bottom of the fifth for two, but Elon quickly responded with two of their own in the sixth. The Lady Trojans added the final run of the contest in their half of the sixth inning.
The Phoenix were led by Pam Brock 3-for-3 performance with two RBI in the second game. Dani Concepcion, Jessica Swearengin, Gustin, Speed and Borgaard all added hits for Elon. Both Concepcion and Swearengin scored two runs.
Amanda Zentner went the distance for Elon, picking up her fourth victory of the season. Zentner allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out two Lady Trojan hitters. Cassie Wilkenson suffered the loss for TSU.
The Phoenix will finish their swing to Alabama with a trip to future Big South foe Birmingham-Southern on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. EST.
