CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Elon men’s and women’s cross country teams each turned in strong performances today, Oct. 14, in the Royal Cross Country Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park. The women finished second out of 21 teams with 83 points, while the men took fourth out of 19 teams with 120 points. The Phoenix added a total of five new times to both the men’s and women’s all-time performance lists.

"Our top three girls ran well and have been consistent all season," said Elon men's and women's cross country coach Christine Engel. "We just need to close a couple key gaps as we head into the conference championship. The men put together a very good team performance today, especially our top four. Luis (Vargas) and Sean (Magee) really led us up front. This was a good final race before the conference meet."

The women finished behind Florida State (36 points) and ahead of three SoCon schools - Western Carolina (fourth - 111 points), Davidson (fifth - 135 points) and Georgia Southern (eighth - 230 points). Davidson won the men's meet with 47 points, followed by Queens University of Charlotte (97 points) and Virginia Military Institute (117 points). The Elon men finished ahead of SoCon opponents Western Carolina (sixth - 125 points) and The Citadel (10th - 292 points).
