SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon senior guard
Drew Spradlin was tabbed as one of the players on the 10-member Preseason All-Southern Conference Team, which was voted on by the league's head coaches and announced on Wednesday. The Phoenix was chosen to finish fifth in the SoCon's North Division.
Spradlin earned the all-league nod after a junior campaign in which he averaged 13.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. One of four players to start all 31 games for the Phoenix in 2010-11, Spradlin shot 41.9 percent from the field. In a 67-54 victory over Samford on Jan. 8, Spradlin set a new career-high by draining 11 free throw attempts. He tallied seven 20+ point games as a junior, including a 28-point performance in a 77-70 league win over Davidson on Jan. 20. Spradlin set a personal-best with five assists in the 2010-11 season-opener at South Carolina.
He enters his senior year needing just 23 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career. Spradlin was a 2011 third-team Academic All-American.
In the preseason poll balloting, Elon was selected to finish fifth in the North Division with 29 points in the voting. Chattanooga claimed nine first-place votes and was named the preseason favorite in the division.
Davidson garnered 10 first-place nods on its way to being chosen as the South Division's preseason favorite.
The 2011-12 Elon season will get underway with an exhibition contest at Alumni Gym on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. against Washington & Lee. The regular season starts on Nov. 11 with a 9 p.m. game at UMass, while the first regular-season home contest comes at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 against South Carolina.
