CHARLESTON, S.C. – Luis Vargas and Allyson Oram both broke school records as the Elon men’s and women’s cross country teams finished sixth and third, respectively, at the Southern Conference Championships. Vargas earned 10th in the men’s 8K race with a time of 24:49.07, while Oram took ninth with a time of 17:30.20 in the women’s 5K race held at Trophy Lakes.

Vargas earned All-SoCon second team and All-SoCon Freshman Team honors after recording the best finish by a Phoenix male at the SoCon championships and is just the second male in program history to earn all-conference honors. Oram and Morgan Dencke were both named to the women’s All-SoCon second team. Sean Magee and Haylee Dawe each earned All-SoCon Freshman honors to help the Phoenix to six total all-conference performances.

The women added five times to the school’s all-time performance list, replacing the top four times, and set eight personal bests on route to its third-place finish. Denecke finished behind Oram with in 14th with a personal record of 17:43.70, replacing her time that ranks second on the all-time list. Emily Tryon and Dawe took 20th and 21st, respectively, with the new third and fourth times of 17:54.40 and 17:54.90 on the performance list. Christine Pacewicz is now seventh on the all-time list after finishing 47th with a time of 18:36.60, while Kylie Womack earned a new personal-best of 18:49.10 for 52nd. Both Brennan McDavid (55th) and #Katelyn O’Dunne# (57th) broke 19 minutes for the first time in their careers with times of 18:50.10 and 18:53.70. Amanda Parker rounded out the women’s race for Elon in 77th with a time of 19:34.10.

“Today we had eight of our nine women set personal records,” said Elon cross country coach Christine Engel. “They all ran the best race of their career on the same day as the championship race. I’m happy with the way they competed. Having the top four finish the race under 18 minutes is a great sign for our team and we have our top seven runners back next year. This race was a huge step up in the level of this program.”

Along with Vargas’ school record, the men set four more personal bests and replaced two times on the all-time performance list. Magee finished 25th with a time of 25:20.69, while #Conor O’Brien# (42nd) and Ari Rothschild (44th) earned new personal bests of 25:43.36 and 25:46.23, respectively, for the new eighth and ninth times on the performance list. Ben Perron took 51st with a time of 26:08.45 followed by Adam Bernstein who finished 60th with a personal record of 26:29.86. Clay Sankey (26:33.76) and Ranley Gousee (26:36.59) took 62nd and 64th, while Sean Martyn (68th) capped off the race for the Elon men with a personal best of 26:48.62.

“Luis had an extraordinary race,” said Engel. “He ran with such poise for a freshman in his first collegiate championship. Five of the guys set personal records and had great performances. It was a good meet and I’m excited about the future of the program with so many of them competing at a high level.”

UNCG won the SoCon title for both the men (26 points) and the women (35 points), while the Spartans’ Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell each won the individual titles.

In the women’s race, Furman took second (80 points) ahead of Elon’s finish of 111 points. For the men, Davidson earned second (73 points), Furman finished third (82 points), Appalachian State took fourth (91 points) and Chattanooga claimed fifth (103 points) in front of Elon, which tied with Western Carolina for sixth, each with 166 points.
