Elon Suffers Setback at UNCG

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
UNC Greensboro took advantage of nine unearned runs to snap a 10-game losing streak to Elon as the Spartans edged the Phoenix 13-9 in game two of a Southern Conference baseball series on Saturday.

UNCG (15-10, 7-4 SoCon) grabbed the lead in the second inning, scoring three unearned runs.  Eric Brindle reached on an Elon error to start the frame before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After Thomas Troelstrup walked, Ray Quinones singled to center to load the bases.  A Ray Crawford single to right plated Brindle with the game's first run before Chris Baker lined a single to right to drive home two more as the Spartans built a 3-0 lead.

With Harry Austin on second and Jake Luce on first with two outs in the top of the third, Niko Fraser bounced a 1-0 pitch back up the middle to get Elon (18-10, 9-2) on the board.

Sebastian Gomez drew a one-out walk in the top of the fourth and raced to third on a failed pick-off attempt before Garrett Koster got one up and over the right field wall for his second homer of the year.  This one knotted the score at three.

UNCG moved back on top in the fifth when Trevor Edwards hit his fourth home run over the right field wall.  This one was a two-run shot that also scored Bobby Martin who had reachd on a fielder's choice.  With two away, Zach Leach singled to left.  Leach then scored when Troelstrup ripped the first pitch from Thomas Girdwood down the left field line for a double as the Spartans built a 6-3 lead.

Elon threatened in the top of the sixth as both Neal Pritchard and Gomez walked to start the inning.  After a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, UNCG hurler Jarett Miller fanned both Koster and Ben Scott before pinch-hitter Ryan Kinsella drew a walk to load the bases.  Austin then struck out to end the inning, keeping the Phoenix off the board.

A third Phoenix error led to another UNCG run in the last of the sixth.  The error allowed Martin to end up on third.  He would score two hitters later on Brindle's single to shallow center.  With the bases full, Troelstrup drew a walk to force home the eighth run of the day.  UNCG's lead reached 11-3 when Quinones tripled to center to clear the bases.  A 12th run would score on a bases-loaded walk.

The Phoenix loaded the bases with walks to Luce and Fraser ahead of an Alex Swim single in the seventh before Pritchard sent a fly ball to center for a sac fly.  A two-out walk to Koster loaded the bases back up before Scott fouled out to first to end the threat.

Kinsella launched a triple to center to lead off the top of the eighth for the Phoenix.  He trotted home on Eric Serra's single down the right field line to make it a 12-5 game.  With Serra on second after a bunt, Swim lined a two-out single to right to drive home the sixth Elon run of the contest.

The Spartans tacked on their final run with a RBI double in the eighth.

Elon rallied for three runs in the ninth.  With one away, Seth Canipe's single to center was followed by a single from Scott Carcaise and a Kinsella walk.  After Canipe scored on a wild pitch, Serra drove in both Carcaise and Kinsella with a triple to right-center.

Ken Ferrer (3-2) took the loss after he gave up six runs, only three of which were earned, on five hits in 4.2 innings.  Ferrer became just the eighth player in Elon history to eclipse the 200 career strikeout mark as he fanned four, pushing his career total to 202.

UNCG's Jarett Miller (3-2) was the winner, tossing two innings in relief of starter Brandon Browne.  Miller allowed one run on one hit and five walks.  Browne was charged with three runs on four hits in four innings.

Elon out-hit UNCG 11-9 and received two-hit games from Fraser, Swim and Serra.  Quinones posted the lone two-hit outing for the Spartans. It marked the first time this season that the Phoenix out-hit its opponent and lost the game.

Sunday's rubber match is slated for a 1 p.m. start in Greensboro.
