Whitehead, Phoenix Shut Out Wake Forest

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
David Whitehead scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 5-0 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Wednesday night.  The Phoenix pitching retired the final 15 hitters after allowing a lead-off single in the fifth inning.

The win improved Elon to 27-17 while Wake Forest dropped to 17-26 on the year.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Elon broke through for two runs.  With one out, Harry Austin doubled on a ball that one-hopped the wall in left.  After Cyle Rasmus was hit by a pitch, Austin swiped third.  As the throw bounced away from the third baseman Rasmus took second.  Sebastian Gomez got Elon on the board with an infield single that drove home Austin.  Neal Pritchard's flare to right then scored Rasmus with the second run.

With one away in the seventh, Gomez belted an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left for his second homer of the year.  With two down, Alex Swim reached on an error before Garrett Koster crushed a ball to left for his fourth home run of the year as Elon built a 5-0 lead.

Whitehead upped his record to 4-1 on the year.  The freshman struck out four and walked two.  John Brebbia, Greg Amorosso and Mitch Conner combined to finish off the shutout, Elon's fifth of the season.

Niko Spezial fell to 1-1 after taking the loss.  He gave up two runs on three hits in just a third of an inning of relief work.

The Phoenix out-hit the Deacons 9-3 on the night.  Gomez finished the game 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI while Koster also drove in two with a 1-for-4 night.

Elon will return home to face Davidson in a Southern Conference series this weekend.  Friday's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
