Koster Drives in Four as Elon Completes Sweep of Davidson

Box Score

ELON, N.C. --
Garrett Koster went 3-for-4 and drove in a career-best four runs as the Elon Phoenix captured its 30th victory of the season with an 8-3 win over the visiting Davidson Wildcats.  Elon (30-17, 18-6 Southern Conference) has now won 30 or more games in 12 consecutive seasons.

With Forrest Brandt on first after a fielder's choice in the top of the first, Drew Gadaire hit a two-out double off the wall in left to drive in the first run for the Wildcats (18-25, 8-18).

Alex Swim and Ryan Kinsella put Elon runners on the corners with back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the second before Koster ripped the eighth-pitch of his at bat into the gap in right-center to drive home both runners and give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead.

Niko Fraser started the Elon third with a triple to right-center and then raced home on a passed ball to make it a 3-1 game.

After Kinsella walked on four pitches to start the Phoenix fourth, Koster crushed his fifth home run of the season over the batter's eye in center field to stretch its lead to 5-1.

In the fifth, Elon loaded the bases with one away thanks to a Sebastian Gomez single, a Neal Pritchard double and an intentional walk to Swim.  Kinsella picked up an easy RBI by walking to force home Gomez with the sixth Phoenix run of the afternoon.  Davidson escaped further damage when Jip Richards came on to record a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.

With Harry Austin and Fraser on second and third, Gomez bounced a one-out single through the right side of the drawn in Wildcat defense to plate both runners in the bottom of the sixth.

Coleman Barron singled to start the Davidson seventh before stealing both second and third with one out.  The Wildcats made it an 8-2 game when Freeman lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

Davidson trimmed its deficit to 8-3 thanks to doubles from both Gadaire and James Cerbie in the eighth inning.

Dylan Clark (2-3) won for the second straight outing, tossing a career-long seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits.  He also struck out a career-best five hitters.

Davidson's Ryan Overcash (2-5) took the loss after being charged with five runs on eight hits in four frames.

Along with Koster, Elon's offensive attack was paced by Fraser (3-for-3, two runs) and Gomez (2-for-5, one run, two RBI).  Gomez ran his hitting streak to eight games with the last six contests all producing multi-hit outings for the freshman.

Four Davidson players – Freeman, Gadaire, Cerbie and Barron – all had two-hit games.

Up next for Elon is a Tuesday evening tilt at UNC Wilmington.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
