ELON, N.C. –
In its only home competition of the season, the Elon University men’s and women’s cross country teams did not disappoint, as the Phoenix women placed four athletes in the top seven to take home the team title with just 26 points in the 5K competition, while the Elon men placed third overall with 73 points in the 8K race.

The first place finish for Elon marks the second in a row for the Phoenix women, as the team opened the season with a first place showing at the College of Charleston Invitational on Sept. 10. It marks the first time since the 1996 season that an Elon women's cross country won two or more competitions in one season, as the '96 squad won three meets. This year's women's squad is the first to do so since Elon joined the Division I ranks.

The junior duo of Emily Tryon and Morgan Denecke paced the Phoenix up front, as the two finished third and fourth, respectively. Tryon finished with a time of 18:09, while Denecke clocked in at 18:12.

“Overall the women had a great performance today. We have come up narrowly short the last few seasons at this meet, so it was great to come up with a win on our home course,” said Elon head coach Christine Engel. "We had some great performances in our 1-to-5 runners and several PR’s today. Overall, the team perfomed as a unit today and I was pleased with their performance."

Just behind in sixth place was sophomore Allyson Oram at 18:19, while rookie Haylee Dawe took seventh with a time of 18:21.

Twenty seconds after Dawe was sophomore Amanda Parker, who finished 11th overall after clocking in at 18:41.

UNCG’s Ashley Schnell set a course record this morning after taking home the women’s individual title with a time 17:19. Schnell is only the second runner to break the 18-minute mark on the Elon Cross Country Course. UNCG's Chelsea Sumney ran an unattached time of 17:46 as well.

On the men’s side, senior #Conor O’Brien# was the first Phoenix to cross the finish line after he clocked in at an even 26:00, good for ninth place. The Elon men were led by rookie for Luis Vargas for most of the competition until the freshman was sidelined in the middle of the race due to injury.

“The men had several good performances and improved in several areas from last week’s meet at Charleston,” Engel added. “Unfortunately, our top runner Luis [Vargas] went down with an injury in the middle of the race and had to pull out, so it was disappointing not to have him at a high level today. We hope to be back in full force in two weeks, but overall we tightened a lot of gaps today compared to last week in Charleston. Today was a step in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Sophomore Ben Perron was the next Elon runner to cross the finish line after placing 13th overall with a time of 26:07, while senior Clay Sankey clocked in four second later at 26:11, good for a 14th place finish.

Rookie Ari Rothschild was the only other Elon runner in the top-20, as the freshman placed 16th overall with a time of 26:17.

UNCG took home the men’s team title with a miniscule 17 points, as the Spartans’ Paul Chelimo set a course record with a time of 23:40.

Elon returns to action on Sept. 30 when the Phoenix treks to Charlotte for the Charlotte XC Invitational.
