Elon Game Notes

THE SERIES: Elon and Samford are meeting for only the ninth time on Saturday. Samford leads the all-time series, 5-3, but the Phoenix has won two out of the last three meetings. The two teams met earlier this season on Dec. 5, as Sam Coffer’s season-high 20 points led the Phoenix to a 69-44 victory over the Bulldogs. Elon has won its last two games against Samford in Birmingham, coming away with a 47-42 win last year and a 60-59 victory two seasons ago.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following Saturday’s game at Samford, the Phoenix shuffles off to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a Monday night tilt versus the Lady Mocs. Elon is looking to avenge its home loss to UTC earlier this season on Dec. 3 in Alumni Gym.

FROM LONG DISTANCE:
Ali Ford hit three three-pointers in Elon’s win over UNCG on Jan. 23, tying her with Loretta Lawson for the most three-pointers in program history (234). Ford became the Southern Conference’s all-time leader in three-point field goals made on Dec. 29 versus Wagner when she passed Davidson’s Janna Magette.

DOUBLE YOUR FUN: Kelsey Evans recorded her 19th career double-double in Elon’s win over UNCG on Jan. 23, her second straight and fourth this season. Evans is averaging 13 points and 13.5 boards over Elon’s last two games.

ON POINT: Aiesha Harper currently leads the Southern Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.7. Harper is fifth in the league in assists per game at 4.2. Harper dished out a career-best eight assists on Dec. 29 against Wagner.

ON THIS DATE: Elon has an 8-7 record all-time in games played on Jan. 28. Elon’s last win on Jan. 28 was 2010 when the Phoenix claimed an 83-32 win over Southern Virginia.

GETTING DEFENSIVE:
Elon has held its opponent to less than 50 points in five of its victories this season, including the last three. The Phoenix accomplished that feat four times all of last season.

ON THE GLASS: Elon is a perfect 9-0 this season when it outrebounds its opponent. Conversely, the Phoenix is 1-9 when losing the battle on the boards.

PLAY4KAY SET FOR FEB. 4: Elon will participate in the 2012 Play 4Kay initiative when the Phoenix women's basketball team plays host to Furman on Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. Play 4Kay, formerly known as WBCA Pink Zone, is an initiative that allows a nation of coaches to raise awareness and funds for cancer research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The late Kay Yow, former Elon and NC State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4Kay after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away on January 24, 2009.

ROAD TO ASHEVILLE: The 2012 Southern Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 2-5 in Asheville, N.C. Kimmel Arena will play host to the first round and quarterfinal games on March 2-3 before the tournament shifts to the Asheville Civic Center for the semifinals and championship on March 4-5.
