Silverman Earns Upset Win to Advance to ITA Regional Final

CARY, N.C. -- Cameron Silverman advanced to the ITA Carolina Regional singles final today, Oct. 21, after upsetting the nation's preseason top-ranked player, Henrique Cunha from Duke, in a three-set thriller (7-5, 3-6, 6-4) in the semifinals at the Cary Tennis Center. Silverman will face North Carolina's sixth-seeded Esben Hess-Olesen in the championship match tomorrow at 1 p.m.

In the first set, Silverman grinded his way to a 7-5 victory over Cunha to take an early advantage. But the country's top-ranked player came back in the second set to even it up, topping Silverman 6-3 to force a third set. In the third, Silverman made program history, claiming a 6-4 victory to earn the win.

"Today was an incredible win for Cameron and our program," said Phoenix head coach Michael Leonard. "I'm proud of the way he battled today and now we focus our attention on tomorrow's match."

Silverman and Hess-Olesen's match is slated for 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Cary Tennis Center.
