ELON, N.C. – Coming off an outstanding fall campaign, Elon University head men’s tennis coach
Michael Leonard has announced his team’s schedule for the upcoming 2013 spring season, which includes hosting the 2013 Southern Conference Tennis Championships at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center.
“We’ve put together a challenging non-conference schedule that should prepare us well for Southern Conference play and have us ready to be in the hunt for the league title,” stated Leonard. “In addition, we are very excited to host the conference tournament this season and for fans to see our great facility.”
Elon opens the regular season with four straight matches on the road, beginning with a Jan. 19 date with Duke in Durham, N.C.
Following a Jan. 30 match at Campbell, the Phoenix faces back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents on Feb. 8 and 10 when it takes on NC State and Wake Forest.
The Phoenix plays at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for the first time on Feb. 16 when it welcomes Wingate and Washington & Lee to campus for a pair of matches. Elon faces Wingate at 9:30 a.m. before playing W&L later in the day at 1:30 p.m. In all, Elon has a total of 12 home matches slated this spring.
League action begins on March 13 when the maroon and gold heads down the road to Davidson, N.C., to face the Wildcats. The Phoenix hosts conference foes Wofford (March 16), Furman (March 17), College of Charleston (April 6) and Georgia Southern (April 7) this season.
Elon’s final non-conference match comes on March 30-31 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., with the Middle Tennessee State University Shootout. Other than Elon and host MTSU, the competitive field includes: Illinois State, Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, DePaul and Florida Atlantic.
The 2013 SoCon Tennis Championships head to Elon’s campus on April 18-21. This year marks the 64th year of the SoCon Men’s Tennis Championships. The winner of the league competition will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
