Davidson Rallies Past Elon in 11 Innings

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. -
- Twice Davidson was down in their last at bat, and twice the Wildcats rallied to earn a 9-8 victory in 11 innings over the Elon Phoenix.

With the game even at five in the ninth, the Phoenix (12-8, 6-3 SoCon) got solo homers from both Alex Swim and Garrett Koster to take a 7-5 lead only to see Davidson (7-10, 2-4) score two unearned runs in the bottom half to knot it back up.

Elon went ahead 8-7 in the 11th inning when Swim singled home Jake Luce.  The Phoenix would leave the bases loaded that inning.

The bottom of the 11th began with singles by Andrew Barna and James Cerbie.  Michael Zeblo showed bunt, but pulled it back and bounced one up the middle to drive home Barna to tie the game at eight.  After a walk loaded the bases, the Phoenix cut down two runners at the plate.  Jake Berman hit a 1-0 pitch to left that just made it over the glove of Luce to score the winning run.

Andrew MacDonald (2-1) was charged with the loss as he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in four innings out of the pen.  Starter Spencer Medick gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits in six frames while fanning eight.

Davidson's Henry Sisson (1-1) picked up the win despite giving up three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.

Elon took a 1-0 lead on a Ryan Kinsella single in the first only to see the Wildcats come back with two in the bottom half.

Davidson pushed across single runs in the third and fourth before the maroon and gold pulled within one, 4-3, in the sixth.  With one away in the top of the sixth, Kinsella doubled off the fence in center and went to third on a Koster single.  Niko Fraser followed with a hit-and-run single that left runners on the corners and score the first run.  After a walk loaded the bases, Casey Jones was hit by a pitch to force home the second run.

The Phoenix went back in front 5-4 in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Koster and Fraser.  Davidson immediately tied it back up in the bottom half on a bases-loaded fielder's choice.

Elon pounded out 14 hits, including four by Koster.  Swim had three hits on the day to run his hitting streak to a career-long 13 games.

Up next for Elon are two mid-week games against Clemson.  Tuesday's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. in Clemson, S.C., while Wednesday's 5 p.m. contest will be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
