MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- For the first time in its nine-year membership in the Southern Conference, the Elon baseball team did not open league play with a victory as the Phoenix fell 7-1 to 30th-ranked College of Charleston on Friday night.
Elon (5-4, 0-1 SoCon) fell behind in the second inning when Cody Martin hit a solo homer to right field. The Cougars (7-1, 1-0 SoCon) added five runs in the third with the big blow coming when Rob Harding hit a three-RBI double to left-center.
Charleston tacked on its final run in the fifth when Brandon Murray led off the inning with a home run to center.
The Phoenix got its lone run on a
Garrett Koster homer, his third of the year, in the top of the eighth.
Elon was only out-hit 9-8, but stranded eight runners on the night.
Kyle Webb (1-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in five innings.
John Antonelli continued the solid pitching out of the Elon bullpen this season as he came on and gave up just one hit and struck out four in three frames.
CofC's Josh Renfro (1-1) picked up the win with six scoreless innings. He struck out eight and gave up six hits.

Sebastian Gomez,
Alex Swim and
Ryan Kinsella - all notched two-hit nights.
Murray ended the game 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI while Martin went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Due to rain being in the forecast for much of Saturday, the two teams will finish off the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
