ELON, N.C. -- Thanks to a quartet of freshmen and strong pitching, the Elon Phoenix claimed a series win over the visiting Towson Tigers with a 6-2 victory in Sunday's rubber match from Latham Park. The victory upped Elon's record to 21-17 overall while Towson dropped to 18-18.
The four freshmen in the starting lineup -
Quinn Bower,
Tyler McVicar,
Casey Jones and
Blaine Bower - combined to go 7-for-14 with five runs scored and five RBI. On the mound,
Spencer Medick (1-2) won for the first time in an Elon uniform as he scattered four hits over six innings and allowed just two unearned runs.
Elon took a 2-0 lead in the last of the second on a Jones sacrifice fly and a
Quinn Bower single.
After Towson made it a 2-1 game on a fourth-inning sac fly, Elon gained some breathing room with a four-run fifth. With one out, McVicar reached on an infield single before moving to third thanks to walks to
Jake Luce and Jones.
Blaine Bower's single to right scored McVicar to make it a 3-1 game before
Eric Serra was hit by a pitch for force in Luce.
Quinn Bower lined a ball that deflected off the glove of leaping third baseman Zach Fisher for a double down the left field line to plate the last two runs of the inning.
Towson scored its second run on a sac fly in the sixth.
Elon pitching faced more than four batters in an inning just once on the day and that came when five Tiger hitters batted in the second. The Phoenix bullpen retired the final eight hitters of the game.
The Phoenix will remain at home for a Wednesday night match-up with longtime rival High Point. First pitch at Latham Park is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
