SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon stranded 13 runners and made four errors which were costly as the Phoenix dropped an 11-5 decision to the Wofford Terriers on Friday evening.
Elon (22-18, 12-7 Southern Conference) took an early 1-0 lead in the second on back-to-back doubles by
Ryan Kinsella and
Jake Luce only to see Wofford (15-22, 4-12) come back with a run in the bottom half to tie it.
The Terrier went in front for good in the fourth on a Matthew Pelt two-out homer to left-center.
With Wofford up 3-1 in the last of the sixth, the Phoenix committed two errors which led to four unearned runs in a six-run outburst as the Terriers built a 9-1 lead. A sac fly and error in the seventh allowed Wofford to score its final two runs.
The Phoenix tried to fight its way back in the eight, scoring four times.
Garrett Koster and
Tyler McVicar both drew walks to start the inning before a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet.
Joey Tomko struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch that also allowed Koster to score and McVicar to take third. A ball-four wild pitch to
Michael Elefante scored McVicar to make it 11-3. After
Alex Swim's infield single with two outs loaded the bases,
Blaine Bower bounced one up the middle to drive in Elon's final two runs of the night.
Elon's
Dylan Clark (7-3) was charged with the loss as he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out six.
Brandon Yarusi (4-4) was the winning pitcher. He struck out six and allowed just one run on six hits in 6.1 innings.
With a 70 percent chance of rain on Sunday, the two teams will now conclude this three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
