Early Woes Let Wake Forest Slip Past Elon

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
After jumping out to an early lead, the Elon Phoenix saw the Wake Forest Demon Deacons rally to claim a 7-5 victory in baseball action on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Phoenix (26-21) put 10 Wake Forest (27-19) runners on via a walk or hit-by-pitch in the first 3.1 innings and four would come around to score.  Elon surrendered just three hits on the night and John Antonelli retired the final 13 Deacon hitters.

Elon took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Ryan Kinsella homered off the video board in right-center driving in both Alex Swim and Sebastian Gomez.

After Wake Forest loaded the bases in the bottom half thanks to a triple and two walks, the Deacons were able to score twice to trim their deficit to 3-2.

The Phoenix came right back with a two-run second as Gomez laced a two-out, two-RBI double to make it a 5-2 contest.

With Elon leading 5-3 in the last of the fourth Wake Forest loaded the bases with two one-out walks and a hit batter.  The Deacons then recorded their third and final hit of the contest, but it was a big one as Mac Williamson lined his 14th homer of the season over the wall in left to make it 7-5.

Ryan Pennell (1-1) took the loss after he was charged with three runs on no hits in two innings out of the pen.  Antonelli gave the Phoenix a chance as he struck out four in 4.2 innings.

Nate Jones (3-0) was the winning pitcher as he tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for Wake Forest.  Michael Dimock got the final four outs to claim his 11th save of the season.

Casey Jones had three of Elon's eight hits on the night while both Swim and Gomez had two-hit outings.

Elon will get its shot at revenge on Wednesday evening as Wake Forest will visit Latham Park for a 6 p.m. contest.
