ELON, N.C. -- A day after a family connection to the Carolina Panthers organization helped bring a former NFL wide receiver to campus, the Elon football team was back on the Hunt and Tucker practice fields continuing its preparations for the upcoming 2012 season on Monday afternoon.
On Sunday, the squad was visited by Pro Bowl receiver Muhsin Muhammad who joins Ray Lewis and Kerry Rhodes as NFL stars who have addressed the Phoenix in the past year and a half.
The maroon and gold altered its schedule for both Monday and Tuesday, moving the team's final two-a-day to Tuesday and practicing just once on Monday.
Here are coach
Jason Swepson's thoughts following Monday's workout:
Swepson on Muhsin Muhammad's visit:
"
Brice Wordsworth's family has a connection with the Panther organization. He came to me a week ago and said the Muhsin was going to be in the area and would like to say a few words to the team. He spoke the the team for about an hour and talked about the process of being a football player - the routine of being a football player. He talked about how you have to fall in love with the practice, the lifting and the ice tubs - all the things that make up a football player. Then he talked about the word 'professional' and what it is to be a professional athlete. He talked about injury prevention. He hit on all the points that these kids need to hear about. I can't thank him enough. The North Carolina kids grew up watching him. They were glued to him. Overall it was a great meeting for our guys."
Swepson on Saturday's scrimmage:
"We played with a skeleton staff on offense, but I think we're on pace to be a successful offense when we get those guys back. It was good to see the defense create some turnovers and put some pressure on the offense. Right now they are playing with a lot of confidence. I'm real anxious to see that unit play each week."
Swepson on the practice schedule changes:
"I wanted to get a good meeting in this morning. It gave us as a staff one more opportunity to discuss personnel. We did a little scout team stuff this afternoon and the two-deep is taking form."
Swepson on the scout team:
"I think we have a very good scout team. They will make our offense and defense work that much more. I think we stressed about how everyone has an important role on this team. Nobody has a small role. If it's on the scout team, then your game days are Tuesday and Wednesday and you have to get the two-deep ready. We have some great kids that love to play the game."
Swepson on Tuesday's schedule:
"Those guys in their final year of eligibility will get the morning off. I know they're excited about that. We'll get a good practice with what is really the 2013 team. It's always good for us as coaches to see some of that. It gives us a little preview and the opportunity to see what we would do if someone goes down. We'll be in uppers in the morning and in full pads in the evening."
