FINAL RESULTS
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Martyna Mierzwa shot a final round 73 on her way to a tie for eighth individually in the season-opening Terrier Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Mierzwa's performance helped the Phoenix to a sixth place team showing at the event with a mark of 614 (308-306).
Mierzwa's 148 (75-73) was five strokes off the winning mark and tournament 36-hole record of 143 (68-75) recorded by Gardner-Webb's Mary K Donovan. Mierzwa recorded a par on 24 of her 36 holes in the tournament.
Katie Partridge led a trio of Phoenix golfers who finished in the top 30 of the 73-golfer field. Partridge carded a 154 (77-77) to tie for 21st while freshmen
Sunna Vidisdottir and
Emily Brooks both shot a 156 (78-78 each) to tie for 27th. Brooks recorded six birdies during the event.
A third freshman,
Kathryn Buckingham, debuted with a tournament mark of 160 (79-81) to place in a tie for 46th.
Competing as an individual, Elon's
Kristi Ingram placed 68th with a score of 171 (85-86).
UNC Pembroke rallied with a second-round 294 to take the team title with a mark of 595 (301-294). UNCP edged out Gardner-Webb (294-303--597) by two strokes. The rest of the top five included UNC Wilmington (296-306--602), host Wofford (311-293--604) and Mercer (304-301--605).
The Phoenix bested Samford (309-307--616), High Point (309-309--618), Appalachian State (313-303--619), USC Upstate (313-317--630), Presbyterian (321-318--639), The Citadel (329-322--651) and South Carolina State (332-325--657).
The Elon women will be back on the links next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 17-18) at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C.
