ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its eighth consecutive match following a 7-0 sweep against the Radford Highlanders on Monday, Feb. 25, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon improves to 8-1 on the year with the victory. The team’s eight-match winning streak ties the longest streak for the program since making the transition to the Division I level.
“I’m proud of the way we competed at every position today,” said Phoenix head coach
Elizabeth Anderson. “We’re continuing to improve and make strides as the season goes on. We look forward to getting back out on the courts later this week.”
Jordan Johnston and
Frida Jansaker improved to 9-1 on the year and won their sixth consecutive match after defeating Meg Napolitano and Taylor Newman at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 decision. The Phoenix swept all three doubles matches to take the match’s first point and an early lead.
Briana Berne and
Barbora Lazarova quickly dispatched their opponents at No. 5 and 6 singles to extend Elon’s lead to 3-0. Berne defeated Allison Michael, 6-0, 6-0, while Lazarova won, 6-0, 6-0, as well over Taylor Fay.
Bryn Khoury improved to 9-2 on the year following a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Napolitano. Khoury has won seven straight matches for the maroon and gold.
Johnston claimed a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles versus Gemma Valls, while Jansaker registered a 6-1, 6-4, decision at No. 2 over Newman.
Viviana Stavreva put the finished touches on the sweep at No. 3 singles, topping Hana Babic, 6-4, 6-0.
Elon returns to action Thursday at 2:30 p.m. when it faces instate foe Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C.
