ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 win over Wofford on Saturday, March 16, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon (7-4, 3-0 SoCon) swept doubles and claimed all but one singles match against Wofford (2-8, 0-3 SoCon) to secure the home win.
Elon took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
Juan Madrid and
Jordan Kaufman opened the match with an 8-5 win at No. 3 versus Wofford’s Parks Thompson and Graham Duncan to get the Phoenix started.
Cameron Silverman and
Stefan Fortman, ranked 34th in the nation as a tandem, clinched the doubles point for Elon with an 8-4 decision against Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron at the top slot.
Robert Lindgren and
Brian Kowalski were also victorious for the Phoenix in doubles.
Lindgren pushed the Phoenix out to a 2-0 lead in singles, as the rookie defeated Wofford’s Jackson Keith in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Shortly thereafter, Silverman gave Elon a 3-0 edge after topping Galloway at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Kowalski clinched the victory for the Phoenix at No. 4 singles, topping Walker Heffron in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Fortmann extended Elon’s lead at No. 2 singles after claiming a 6-2, 6-3, victory against Drew Superstein. Fortmann improves to 8-2 on the year with the win.
Juan Madrid was victorious in three sets against Wofford’s Graham Duncan, bouncing back for a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) decision.
Elon returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center tomorrow at 1 p.m. against conference foe Furman.
