ELON, N.C. –
The Elon University men’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to USC Upstate on Saturday, March 9, in non-conference action from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Phoenix started off strong in doubles, winning two out of three matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite dropping No. 1 singles, Elon bounced back to take No. 2 and 3 to win the point. Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren won at No. 2, while Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman came away victorious at No. 3.

But the Spartans stormed back in singles, taking four of six matches to secure the win.

Stefan Fortmann was one of two Elon players to come away victorious in singles, topping Yvon Haessig in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Fortmann improves to 5-2 on the year with the win.

Kaufman battled Ramon Simonetti in a three-set thriller, coming away with a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5, decision. Kaufman has won four straight in singles and improves to 5-3 on the year.

Cameron Silverman, ranked 26th in the nation in singles, dropped a tough battle at No. 1 singles to Matthias Kidler. Silverman bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win 6-2 in the second, but Kidler managed to claim a 7-5 victor in the third.

Elon returns to action on Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Texas-Pan American at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
