Elon Reaches 20-Win Mark to Advance in SoCon Tournament

Agate

ELON, N.C. –
The second-seeded Elon Phoenix (20-3) won its ninth straight match and its 20th of the season with a 4-0 victory over seventh-seeded Georgia Southern (10-11) in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship today, April 19. Due to the threat of inclement weather, singles matches were played first.

“I was really proud of the team today,” said Elon’s head women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We went out there really focused from the very beginning since we started with singles. I felt they did a good job of creating energy from the start so that we could play well and move forward quickly.”

At No. 3, Bryn Khoury claimed the first point of the match for Elon with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mary Phillips Smith. The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead after Frida Jansaker posted a win over Jordana Klein, 6-1, 6-1, at the second position.

Viviana Stravreva defeated Stephanie Woods, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 to put the maroon and gold one match away victory. A victory at No. 6 by Maria Camara Ruiz clinched the match and a spot in the semifinals for Elon, as the sophomore topped Caitlin Kitchen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Phoenix will take on the winner of the winner of the three-seed Furman vs. sixth-seed Chattanooga match tomorrow, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
