Men's Tennis Suffers Setback at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Elon University men’s tennis team dropped its first Southern Conference road match of the season following a 5-2 setback at UNCG on Tuesday, April 9. Elon falls to 14-7 (7-2 Southern Conference) with the loss, while UNCG improves to 14-2 (7-2 Southern Conference) with the win.
 
The Spartans claimed two out of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The 43rd-ranked duo of Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann dropped their first league match of the season, falling 8-4 to UNCG’s James Dougherty and Randy Phillips.
 
Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman captured Elon’s lone victory in doubles play, topping Cameron Smith and Gaston Murry, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
 
The Spartans carried the momentum over to singles, winning four out of six matches to hand the Phoenix its second conference loss.
 
Madrid was successful for the maroon and gold at No. 6 singles, claiming a 6-0, 6-4, decision against Smith. Madrid improves to 10-7 with the win.
 
Robert Lindgren won in straight sets at No. 3, topping UNCG’s Murray, 6-3, 6-3.
 
The Phoenix closes out the regular season tomorrow at Appalachian State. Following tomorrow’s match, Elon prepares to host the 2013 Southern Conference Championship, April 18-21.
