Meet the Phoenix: Petar Tomic Q&A

With a lot of new faces and a couple players returning for the 2016 season, we will publish a Q&A leading up to home matches for fans to get a chance to meet players on the Elon University men's tennis squad. This week we feature one of seven newcomers, Petar Tomic.

Pete's File
Full Name: Petar Tomic
Birthdate: February 18, 1994
Hometown: Belgrade, Serbia
Class: Junior

You are a Junior transfer from Auburn this year. What has been your experience at Elon thus far?
At first, I honestly didn't know what to expect coming from a big public school. Smaller number of students, and smaller town were something that definitely concerned me the most. However, everthing thus far has been great, and I am at ease knowing that my choice was right and that this is the place where I completely belong.

What do you like the most about being a Phoenix?
The attention that each one of us get, and the care that people around here show everyday.

You and Chris Humphreys are 5-0 in your last five doubles matches, including 3-0 at #1 and a win against a ranked team. (Old Dominion) What would you say has been the key to your success?
I would definitely say it's been our chemistry from the early beginning. Chris and I built a great relationship from my very first day here at Elon, and I believe that this connection drives us, particularly during those moments when we struggle a little bit on the court.

You are one of only three upper-classmen on the team this year. What has been your role in guiding and mentoring six Freshmen?
Since I came here recently, I couldn't help them in an academic way, because I was also getting used to the system. However, I try to replace that gap, and be helpful in other areas. Coming as a freshman it's always hard to deal with home sickness and diversity that college has to offer. Talking to them and making sure that they are happy, satisfied and ready for challenges is definitely the most important role that I have as an upper classman.

You are originally from Serbia, which is also birthplace to ATP world's #1 player Novak Djokovic. We noticed that you have similar taste when it comes to haircut and facial hair:

Would it be safe to say that this is the most popular look among young males in your country?
(Laughing after seeing picture) I would say it's the most comfortable, and the easiest look to acquire. I think that's why most of Serbians go for it.

Tell us one thing that most people outside of your family/close friends don't know about you:
People would never say that I like literature, but I really enjoy reading and writing. People usually get really confused when they hear me saying that. (Smiles)

Who is your "celebrity crush?"
Cheryl Cole and Jennifer Lawrence

If you could have dinner with any three individuals, (personalities, historical figures, fictitious characters, etc.) who would it be and why?
Nikola Tesla (Serbian American inventor),  WilliamShakespeare (English poet, playwright, and actor) and Steve Jobs (an American information technology entrepreneur and inventor). I believe that all three of them are excellent in their areas, and brought something new to this world.  It would be an amazing opportunity to learn something from those three figures.

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Teleportation, so I can go to many different places at the same time.
