ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team is set to take part in a global experience as it travels to Italy from March 16-25 while exploring and learning about the native culture and history of Italy with trips to three different cities in the country.
Elon volleyball becomes the latest Elon University athletic program to travel abroad as part of the Elon Commitment to diversity and global engagement for its students. The Elon football team is also sending members of its program to Costa Rica this week for Spring Break.
Throughout the week, the team will make visits to Milan, Como, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Florence, Assisi and Rome. Along the way, it will see Lake Como, the tiny villages that form the Five Lands "Cinque Terre," the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Basilica of Saint Francis, the Colosseum, the Vatican City and more. During the trip, Elon will take on two teams in Liberi E Forti Firenze in Florence and Volley Ladispoli in Rome.
This marks the second European trip for the Elon volleyball team. It also went to Italy and Switzerland back in March 2013.
"We are so fortunate to be taking this trip to Italy," said Elon head coach
Mary Tendler. "Our players and our team will benefit greatly from this incredible experience. We look forward to playing two very competitive club teams and experiencing other cultures. These student-athletes will learn from, remember and reminisce about this trip for the rest of their lives. Many thanks go out to all of the people that are making this possible!"
Keep up with daily updates of the programs, as members of the team will share their experiences daily on social media and elonphoenix.com. Follow the team's journey on Twitter at @ElonVB, on Instagram at @ElonVB and on Facebook at Elon Volleyball.
