Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Season

The Elon men’s tennis team competed at the University of Virginia Classic and the UNCG Men’s Invitational to open its fall season this weekend. Freshman Tommy Darling reached the finals of the A2 singles draw at UNCG, while two new Phoenix doubles combinations posted 2-1 records at UVa. Fans can see the men's tennis team in action when the Phoenix hosts the annual Elon Fall Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19.

After Rain Delay, Men’s Tennis Starts Strong at Fall Invite

Despite a morning of rain that postponed play until 4 p.m., the Elon men’s tennis team won seven of eight singles matches and three of four doubles matches in the opening day of competition at the Elon Fall Invitational. Throughout the tournament, the Phoenix will take on other players from Presbyterian, Longwood and Campbell. Competition resumes on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Men’s Tennis Rounds Out Fall Season at UNW Invitational

Senior Clark Howell and junior Cody Stauffer-MacDowell helped the Elon men’s tennis team end its fall season on a high note, winning three straight matches at the UNCW Fall Invitational to win the Flight B Doubles bracket. Stauffer-MacDowell also made it to the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket while freshman teammate Carlos Arboleda went 2-1 in the Flight A singles draw. Elon will look forward to dual match play which will begin in mid-January.

#70 Elon Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Play at Duke Invitational

Elon’s Philip Nemec and Chase Helpingstine picked up an impressive 9-8 (5) win over Duke’s Dylan Arnould and Alain Michel as the Elon men’s tennis team opened up its spring season at the annual Duke Invitational. Elon newcomers Eric Turner and Thomas Darling also picked up points for the Phoenix. The tournament is a round robin format with points awarded to each individual for victories based on the number of position they play in singles and doubles.

Phoenix Continues Competition at Duke Invitational

The Elon men’s tennis team finished its second of three days of competition at the annual Duke Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s matches were played on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Elon’s Philip Nemec picked up a singles victory and Eric Turner and Alberto Rojas teamed for a doubles win. Elon will challenge players from East Tennessee State in the final day of competition tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.

Doubles Tandem Leads Elon at Duke Invitational

Elon juniors Philip Nemec and Chase Helpingstine won their second doubles match of the young season to lead the Phoenix men’s tennis team on the final day of the Duke Invitational. Nemec and Helpingstine won two of their three doubles matches during the competition to accumulate 10 points, tied for the most of any doubles duo. Senior Clark Howell and freshman Carlos Arboleda also picked up singles victories on Monday.

No. 19 Duke Defeats No. 70 Elon in Opener

Alberto Rojas fought tooth and nail with 77th-ranked Torsten Wietoska before dropping a straight-set decision in 70th-ranked Elon's 7-0 defeat at the hands of 19th-rated Duke in the men's tennis season-opener for both squads on Saturday evening. Elon will return to action on January 30 with a noon match against East Tennessee State which will be played in Williamsburg, Va. at William & Mary.

#72 Elon Men’s Tennis Can’t Overcome #60 ETSU

The 72nd-ranked Elon men’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of No. 60 East Tennessee State at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the campus of The College of William & Mary. The Phoenix is 0-2 on the young season, facing two ranked opponents to open the year. ETSU, who picked up a 4-3 victory over William & Mary on Friday, remained perfect on the year at 2-0. Elon will remain in Virginia to take on host William & Mary on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Phoenix Falls in Hard-Fought Match at William & Mary

All six singles matches were hotly contested with four matches needing three sets to determine a winner, but in the end it was the William & Mary Tribe that outlasted the No. 72 Elon men’s tennis team, 6-1, on Sunday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The marathon match lasted four hours and 40 minutes as the Phoenix fell to 0-3 on the season. The Tribe improved to 6-4 overall.

Doubles Point the Difference as #74 Elon Falls to #52 UNCW

The doubles point proved the difference in the match as the 74th-ranked Elon men’s tennis team couldn’t overcome #52 UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Courts on Saturday afternoon. Elon (0-4) and UNCW (3-1) split the six singles matches, but the Seahawks won all three doubles matches to earn the team point and a 4-3 victory. Elon will make its home debut on Saturday, Feb. 13 when the Phoenix hosts the Ospreys of North Florida at noon from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
