Freshman Ali Ford led all scorers with 23 points on 7-17 shooting, including four buckets from behind arc, while fellow newcomer Kelsey Evans began her career with a double-double as the Elon women’s basketball team opened the season with an 86-66 win over Youngstown State in the Phoenix Classic Presented by Comfort Inn. Evans grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 13 points for the Phoenix. Elon will resume play tomorrow evening at 9 p.m.

The Navy Midshipmen outscored the Elon Phoenix 42-19 in the second half of play to hand Elon a 68-61 loss on Saturday night at Alumni Gym in the second day of the Phoenix Classic Presented by Comfort Inn. With the loss, Elon fell to 1-1 on the season while Navy improved to 2-0. Kelsey Evans earned all-tournament recognition for her efforts in the tournament. She finished the night with 12 points and seven rebounds, including four offensive boards. Ali Ford also posted 12 points for the Phoenix.
