Phoenix, Mitchum Silence Aggies, 5-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind a career-high eight strikeouts for sophomore hurler Kiandra Mitchum, the Elon University softball team earned a 5-0 shutout victory over longtime Triad rival North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, April 20, at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The victory was Elon's (24-19) third nonconference win in a row while handing the Aggies (13-26) its 12th consecutive loss overall. The Phoenix also avenged a 4-1 loss to N.C. A&T the last time the two teams met in Elon on Feb. 27, and has won eight of the last nine meetings overall in the series.

At the Plate: The Phoenix had six hits in the contest with Kara Shutt going 2-for-4 to pace the Phoenix offensively…Shutt also had a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBI in the contest…Carey Million also drove in a pair of runs and was 1-for-3 at the plate while Emily Roper registered the other RBI in the game…Emily Cameron drew four walks in the contest…The Phoenix also left a lot of potential runs on the bags, tying a season-high with 12 runners left on base.

In the Circle: Mitchum (4-4) went the full distance for the Phoenix as she scattered three hits in her 7.0 innings of work…Her eight fanned batters surpassed her previous season-best total of six from earlier this year…It also ties for the highest total a Phoenix pitcher has had this season…It was also the first seven-inning complete game of the season for the Mechanicsville, Va., native.

The Rundown: The Phoenix had ample opportunities in the first three innings to put runs on the scoreboard. Elon had runners reach third in each of the first three opening frames with either one or two outs, but was unable to find drive them in as a scoreless game went into the fourth.

A three-run top of the fourth broke the game open for the Phoenix. With two outs and the bases loaded, Million singled through the right side to drive in a pair of runners to put the Phoenix up 2-0 while advancing Shutt to third. Roper followed with another single to center field to plate Shutt and give Elon a 3-0 advantage.

The Phoenix added insurance runs to its lead in the top of the seventh. Shutt plated a pair of runs off her second double of the contest to left center that made the score 5-0. That was more than enough support for Mitchum in the bottom half as she set down the Aggies in order to preserve the win.

On Deck
Elon heads to UNCW for a Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend, April 23-24. The Phoenix and the Seahawks begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23, at 3 p.m.
