BLACKSBURG,
Va. - The Elon University softball team traveled to face Virginia Tech for a midweek match up on Feb. 21. The Phoenix fell to the Hokies, 9-1 after six innings at Tech Softball Stadium.
Elon moves to 4-6 on the season while the Hokies improve to 8-2-1.
At the Plate
• The Phoenix was held to three hits on the night. The first hits came on back-to-back singles by
Kaitlyn Wells and
Mauri Murray in the top of the fourth.
Megan Grant ended the shutout for Virginia Tech with an RBI triple.
In the Circle
•
McKenna McCard was handed the loss after tossing 2.1 innings. The junior gave up one unearned run on one hit and now holds a 1-1 record.
Meredith Wells relieved McCard and pitched 3.0 innings of work and gave up seven runs on eight hits.
Kyra Leonard and
Taylor Cherry closed out the game.
The Rundown
• After a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Hokies put up runs in every inning.
• The first run of the game came via a two-out fielding error in the bottom of the second.
RBI doubles in the bottom of both the third and the fourth would add to the lead.

Meredith Wells allowed a two-run home run in the fifth as the Phoenix struggled on offense.
• Four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth would close the game out and end the matchup.
On Deck
The Phoenix will travel to Durham, N.C. to the Duke Tournament this weekend, Feb. 23-25. Elon will face Michigan State, Villanova, Boston University, and Duke.
