Elon Falls To Valpo Friday Afternoon

Elon, N.C.- Elon baseball (4-5) fell in an early afternoon game to Valparaiso (3-5) Friday, 9-4. The Phoenix dropped their first game since last Friday after winning three straight games to get back to .500.
 
Elon was able to grab a third inning lead following a two-run single from Ryan Sprock, but Valpo would respond with seven runs in the middle innings to take game one of the Wake Forest Tournament.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Justin Mitrovich got the start for the Phoenix and kept a clean first inning following an error by the Phoenix.
  • Valpo would answer with two runs in the second inning following a solo home run and an RBI single.
  • The Phoenix would answer in the bottom half of the second. Alex Duffey hit his first career home run to lead off the inning. Following an error and a walk, Charlie Granatell would reach with a single to left. Ryan Sprock singled through the left side which brought home two and saw the Phoenix grab a one run lead.
  • The Beacons countered with another pair of runs to regain the lead in the top of the fourth.
  • Valpo broke the game open with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth and added on with two more runs in the sixth to stretch the Beacon lead to six.
  • Elon countered with a run in the bottom of the eighth but could not capitalize in the final frame and would fall 9-4.
 
NOTES AND STATS
 
  • The Phoenix fell for the first time in four games and fall to 3-4 at Latham Park this season.
  • Alex Duffey hit his first career home run for the Phoenix on Friday. Duffey finished the day one-for-three on the day with a walk.
  • Ryan Sprock picked up another pair of RBIs reaching 17 on the season. Sprock continues to strengthen his lead for the conference's top spot in runs batted in.
  • Kenny Mallory Jr. scored two runs including the go-ahead run in the fourth inning.
  • Kolby Pascarelli had the best outing of his young career, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing no hits.
 
UP NEXT
 
  • The Phoenix will return home to Latham Park on Saturday to face Valpo again. First pitch with the Beacons will be at 4 P.M.
