Mitrovich-Sieracki Duo Handles Hofstra In Series Clincher

Elon, N.C.- The combination of Justin Mitrovich and Ben Sieracki on the mound helped the Elon Phoenix (13-21, 3-8) limit the Hofstra Pride (11-22, 3-8) to a lone run on three hits Saturday evening. The Phoenix picked up their second straight win over the Pride, 2-1 Saturday.

Mitrovich was given the ball for the first time on Saturday and tossed one of his best outings of the season. The right-hander threw seven innings of one-run ball allowing just three hits and striking out six. Sieracki earned his first save as a Phoenix by pitching two innings and striking out a pair of Hofstra batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Justin Mitrovich made the start for the Phoenix and made quick work of the Pride in the first inning.
  • Elon faced off with Carlos Martinez on the mound for Hofstra. Charlie Granatell put up a single in the first inning, but the Pride kept the Phoenix offense at bay.
  • Mitrovich struck out two batters in the second inning before a Connor Offshack single proved to be the only offense the Phoenix could provide in the second frame.
  • Following another three-up, three-down inning from Mitrovich the Phoenix got the hurler some run support. After Tank Yaghoubi and Kenny Mallory Jr. both walked, Charlie Granatell flew out to right, but after a bobbled throw in right field, Yaghoubi sprinted home and evaded the tag of the catcher to put the first run on the board.
  • After the run, both offenses remained quiet with Mitrovich carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning before a Hofstra double broke it up.
  • In the sixth inning, Will Vergantino knocked a two-out double into the left-center field gap which scored Alex Duffey from second base to double the Phoenix lead.
  • Hofstra answered back in the seventh inning with a solo home run.
  • Ben Sieracki pitched the final six outs for the Phoenix with the tying run reaching scoring position in both frames. The senior got out of both jams clean while giving up no hits in the process to secure the 2-1 Elon win.

NOTES AND STATS
  • Justin Mitrovich made his ninth start of the year and his first Saturday start since the end of his freshman season. Mitrovich tied a career high with seven innings while allowing just three hits. Mitrovich's six strikeouts put him at 66 on the season tying his season high from a year ago.
  • Ben Sieracki posted the first save of his Elon career on Saturday. Sieracki pitched the final two frames allowing no hits and striking out two batters.
  • Charlie Granatell put together his second consecutive three-hit game on Saturday. Granatell had three singles and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
